Final Exam

Room: 632 50th Anniversary Building

Date: 14th December

Objective – To have a conversation in English with a native speaker and demonstrate your ability to communicate in a second language and ‘present’ yourself and your ideas in a successful manner.

Topic – You should choose one aspect/theme of our study and class from this semester and talk about it. It can be something that you liked, disliked, or even were confused about. Try to choose something interesting – I don’t really want to talk about the same thing all day ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Guidelines – It’s not a memory or intelligence test. You will be graded instead according to your ability to speak and present yourself in English. Marks will be awarded according to both the form and the content of your ideas as we have discussed all semester.

Week 13: Analysing Greats

During our next class, we will look over the following speeches.

We will try to understand and ascertain why people think they are so good – and, more importantly, what techniques are used to make them so good.

Perhaps some of the material in here might help you for your third and fourth assignments.

We will read and listen to some of the speeches. Then, you will be asked to read some of them too, so that you can practice and more directly understand the techniques involved.

If you listen to some of these at home, they might sound boring and old-fashioned. So be careful to pay attention to the information provided about why the speech is so good.

You can find the material here:

Assignment 3: Presenting Yourself Digitally

As the world of technology changes around us, more and more people are using digital formats to present themselves and their ideas. These are used for resumes, introductions, business, charity, politics, or simple entertainment.

Your 3rd Assignment is to present yourself and an idea digitally and submit it.

As we have discussed in class, the main goals should be:

  • Present a single ‘idea’
  • Communicate clearly
  • Be genuine

Other guidelines or information are as follows.

Theme: This is free. From something deep and profound to something trivial and everyday. Whatever you think is best.

Style: Anything is possible. Formal or casual. Whatever you think is best. It can be edited or it can be plain.

Length: Keep it around the 4-5 minute mark if you can but, again, there are no real rules.

Assessment: Your work will be assessed according to the following four categories

1: Clear communication  2: Idea    3: Presentation style  4: Genuineness

Submission: Please submit the work no later than Wednesday  23rd 10pm.

You can do it via email (superfuntimehappysnack@gmail.com), usb to me, or uploading it to this website. Anything is okay.

Good luck and ask if you have any questions – I’ll upload next lesson’s materials over the next or two.

Thank you

I am trying to get a better room but, unless I can’t, please come to our normal room.

Here’s a five minute video of someone on youtube giving their own thoughts on a topic. Perhaps watching this will give you some ideas about what you want to do or don’t want to do for your third assignment.

Week 11: Ideas and Practice

This week we will have a quick look at this video – we didn’t have time to do it last week.

It is from the curator of TED, Chris Anderson. From this short youtube video, we are going to try to discuss, and understand, the importance of the idea

After that, you will be given a class exercise in which you are asked to practice for your upcoming third assignment.

Learning From Two Videos

Our next class is in the normal room (213); please attend as normal.

We are going to learn a few things from a couple of videos. The things that we learn will be useful for your next couple of assignments so come ready.

The first video is from Tim Urban. You can find it below. It has Korean subtitles!!

From this video, we are going to try and learn two main things for giving presentations:

  1. Use of ppt and media
  2. The use of a shock

Please consider those two aspects (as well as any of your own thoughts).

The second video is from the curator of TED, Chris Anderson. From this short youtube video, we are going to try to discuss, and understand, the importance of the idea

It seems like a lot to take in but we have a 100 minute class and only meet once a week so I think it’s good for us to cover both.

Do your best to have a little look at each of them before class if you can. Ask if you need help.

See you on Wednesday – enjoy your dark playground (you will only understand that if you watch the video)

Try to have a clear objective

Think about both the form and the content (delivery and topic)

Think over how your speech was received last time

If you have any questions or need any help, feel free to ask. I will do what I can for everybody. I know it can be a stressful experience but, ultimately, I hope it’s one that you can learn from as a student and a person.
